When the stroke is complete, the clutch disengages, stopping the ram from moving further. This system allows for accurate and safe control of each press action.

The Ram – Delivering the Force to the Material

The ram (also called the slide) is the moving part of the press that goes up and down. It holds the tool or die that shapes or cuts the metal. Once the clutch engages and the flywheel releases its energy, the ram moves down with great force onto the material.

The ram’s movement must be perfectly aligned and balanced. High-quality presses use slide guides, balance cylinders, and lubrication systems to keep the ram moving smoothly. This precision ensures the finished parts are accurate and consistent.

Working Together in Harmony

The real magic happens when the flywheel, clutch, and ram coordinate their actions. The flywheel stores energy, the clutch releases it at the right time, and the ram delivers the force to the material. If even one part is out of sync, the press may not work correctly, or it could damage the tools and materials.
